Electric fencing is another huge must, these systems are cheap to run once they have been installed and provide excellent security.

The benefits of an automated gate is huge, the last thing you want to be doing is getting out of your vehicle while in front of your home. You should also cut away any bushes and shrubs around your driveway and anywhere a potencial criminal can hide.

When hiring staff, talk to your Neighbours, you want to find someone you can trust to work on your property that your neighbours know of or employ themselves.

All doors should be locked at night, and keys should not be left anywhere visible from the outside. Also make sure that no-one can see you asleep from the outside.

Garden tools such as spades and ladders should also not be left around the house or be easily accessible. These can be used against you.

Building a 'High Risk Crime Map' of South Africa http://www.alertza.co.za/forum/discussion/5/building-a-high-risk-crime-map-of-south-africa Wed, 05 Jan 2011 09:47:03 +0200 rmacle 5@/forum/discussions
I want to provide to tourists (for free) access to a map that shows the high risk crime zones in South Africa. Does anyone know where I may be able to find some hard stats on crimes committed by specific area.

I can only find a) SAPS stats which show crime by post code (not a lot of use when trying to build a map) or b) Excellent websites like this one but that don't have the sheer volume of stats to create an accurate picture (yet!).

Does anyone have any ideas? My alternative is to build something that's based simply on my own knowledge of where I would and wouldn't recommend a visitor to go. But this is largely anecdotal and I only know some parts of the country. Would other forum members be willing to collaborate on a Google SA map if I create it and invite individual members?

Thanks!
